Occupy Compassion
The Occupy Movement has inspired a true revival of grassroots activism in the U.S., bringing thousands of people into the streets to support the creation of a progressive plan to reverse the downward spiral our country is in. What started as a movement to emphasize the growing gap between the rich and the poor, has become a multi-issue conversation, showing the connection between all oppressions and all struggles.
The animal protection movement must be part of that conversation. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We must speak out for the 99% of animals who are threatened with human imposed suffering due to cruelty, exploitation, habitat loss and environmental devastation.
Take action! IDA has created a card called Occupy Compassion. If you are involved with a local Occupy movement, or know of one in your area, please send us your address and we will provide you with the Occupy Compassion card to hand out at your local Occupy protest. Introduce the progressive people in your community to animal rights issues and ask them to take action for animals.
For more information or if you would like Occupy Compassion cards, please contact hope@idausa.org.

I have gotten a few of your cards and with the Occupy Atlanta taking off I am getting more and more requests. I am also a member of Atlanta 11, this group is working to free captive dolphins and whales. We are protesting the Ringling Brothers Circus this week. I have handed out all of the cards I had. Can you send me as many as possible. One woman with another group GARP asked for 50. Atlanta is quickly becoming a hub for animals rights. I would greatly appreciate any amount you can send me.
Thank you for your time,
Kay Carter
Hi Kay,
We can send you more- no problem! Thanks for getting them out there! Hope
I am a member of Occupy Fayetteville , North Carolina .I like your idea with the cards. What do you put on the cards?
As president of Jewish Vegetarians of North America, I would like to express kudos to IDA for this great initiative. It is especially important now as it is becoming increasingly clear that a major societal shift to plant-based diets is essential to have a chance to avoid the climate, food, water, energy, and other crises the world is rapidly approaching.
Why wouldn’t animal welfare issues be included? Once again we hear of animal abuse, and deaths, at the hands of corporate neglect and abuse. PETA has just apprised us of a monkey stangling in a cage, a monkey and rat scaled to death in a pressure washer and over 20,000 lab animals confined in wire cages, poisoned and subjected to cruel and inhumane tests before being put to death. This was brought to PETA’s attention via a whisle-blower. This time the corporation was Bristol-Myers….similar case at Pfizer…and the list goes on.
Another huge concern is the terrible plight of factory farmed animals…done in the name of corporate profit and greed. These animals have no protection from birth to slaughter. In beteen they may encounter socio-paths who torture them, i.e., the numerous cases of poultry being beaten to death by handlers.
Does animal welfare/rights need to be part of Occupy Wallstreet? How can we justify it not being?????
MC
I was just thinking about an Occupy movement for animals the other day! I love this idea! With or without the help of the other Occupiers I will share and spread this message!!!
I love animals.
I support
Thank you so much for helping these animals.
I support Occupy Compassion and we all need to get the word out. It’s time we stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, and focus on the rights of all living beings.
knowledge is not power its empowering lets be empowered
life has value beyond measure
Peace and Love
i love this cause it`s a great way to spread our meesage fight the worst corperations of all.meat and dairy and i believe the drug industries will collapse as the population gets off their cruel diet
For those who think, like Betty Boop, that the Occupy Movement has been too destructive, I say that one should note that any movement that is taking on powerful entities like corporations and government corruption will draw to it other negative powers–both those who are part of the “Black Block” who are anarchists who believe violent destruction is the only way to get the attention of the powerful to the cause, and also government and other infiltrators who are paid to instigate violence to discredit the whole movement. So, be aware of both of those pieces, and recognize that the majority are nonviolent folks seeking powerful change. Everyone I know involved in the Occupy Movement are nonviolent, of various ages, many religious leaders and many older (40-75 year old) folks.
brilliant idea. i support animal rights. sick of humans being so selfish!
The human race is torturing animals for their own selfish needs and wants and this needs to end now. The meat and dairy industries need to be exposed for their lies and corruption and payoffs they have made to “nutritionalists” to promote their deadly products that are promoting dieseases of affluence. Lets expose them and their wicked greed for profits
Occupy wall streeters don’t have the ability to take care of themselves let alone be responsible animal caretakers. I will in no way support occupy wall street parasites or organizations that align themselves with the ‘occupy movement’
You sir are entirely misguided and have obviously not met anyone seriously involved with this movement.
soooooo agree with you, carol!!!
I’m very curious what Betty Boop has considered “destructive” about Occupy. It’s been an entirely non-violent movement–at least on the part of the brave protesters.
I support anything that contributes to the welfare of animals, but I do not support the occupy movement because they have not been able to make their statement without being totally destructive. I agree with what they say, not the way they say it.
Have you attended any events? The only destruction was caused by the police. You are very misinformed. I’d guess you haven’t “Occupied” at all and believe what you hear on the news.
I’ve been waiting for Occupy Compassion.
