Join Activists Around the World for our International Day of Action for South Korean Dogs
Imagine an elderly golden retriever behind the bars of a small cage; his warm brown eyes begging for your help. In the United States this dog would most likely be in a shelter waiting for his forever home, but the dog I speak of was condemned to a tortuous death in the South Korean meat market. Dogs just like those you and I cherish as members of our family are killed for their meat every day in South Korea. In Defense of Animals cannot turn away from the great need of these helpless beings.
IDA’s South Korean partners, Coexistence for Animal Rights on Earth, (CARE) recently received information about a remote dog meat “farm” in Gyeonggi Province. When CARE activists visited the facility, they discovered an appalling scene. Dogs were living in miserable conditions in feces-laden, cramped, ramshackle cages. These neglected dogs were filthy- some suffering from severe injuries.
The conditions were so horrible; these brave activists simply couldn’t leave without the dogs. At the risk of arrest and personal injury, they rescued the dogs, bringing them to CARE’s animal shelter to be treated, cleaned and, most likely, loved for the first time. You can see the images of the dramatic rescue here .
Some in South Korea believe that the more the dog suffers during death, the more virility a man will obtain from eating his or her flesh. Dogs are tortured to death in shocking and unimaginable ways because of this horrible, antiquated superstition. Not only do these dogs endure loneliness and squalor during their short lives, their deaths are inconceivably cruel.
Most South Koreans consider dogs to be companion animals. Only a small minority eat them. We want to support those South Koreans who advocate that animals deserve compassion, love and respect; that they are sentient beings and not mere commodities to be bought, sold and slaughtered.
Please help IDA draw international attention to this issue by participating in our International Day of Action for South Korean Dogs on Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Dozens of cities around the world will host outreach events to educate their communities about this important issue. Activists will pass out leaflets and hold signs outside South Korean Embassies and Consulates around the globe, drawing world attention to the dogs of South Korea. Find out if your city is hosting an event here.
This year’s Day of Action includes cities in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Bolivia, South Africa, India and of course, South Korea. Let’s support the courageous South Korean activists who battle to free these dogs by raising our voices around the world on July 6!

Each one of these animals matter. Each one… Each one would be overjoyed with the home anyone of us could give them. They deserve so much more. Like all animals they are “more than meat”-far more. God bless them each one. May the day come soon when this cruel injustice is ended. Until that time may they be surrounded with light and love at their time of death.
It is horrid to think of these poor creatures being used for their “meat”. I pray to the Lord and and other people to stop this unusual and cruel practice!
Thank you for doing all you can and for everyone who believes in putting a stop to horrid act of cruelty towards these innocent dogs! This has got to stop and together, I hope we can get our voices out and stop this and save these dogs! My heart and prayers go out to all who try to do their best to help to an end to animal abuse.
Hello, I hope this horrible practice is done away with ASAP. How can they do this to poor helpless dogs? Eugenia Renskoff
It is so hard to think of animals being slaughtered let alone the animals we have for love and companionship. Their slaughter is horrific to satisfy misconceptions. How sad that the true benefit of these animals is overlooked.
It has been known for years about Asians eating cats and dogs…unfortunately this is NOT urban legend. I always look askance at meat dishes served in any type of ethnic restaurant…happy to be a vegetarian!
This is just sick! I am against any kind of cruelty to animals and I cannot believe this has been going on and is still being aloud to continue. This is inhumane and needs to end now!
I ALREADY LEFT A REPLY BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO IT!! ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THAT IT’S DOWN RIGHT INSANE AND INHUMANE TO BE THAT CRUEL TO OUR BEST FRIENDS { hell any animal!} I WISH I COULD BLINK AND PUT THE TORTURERS WHERE THE POOR ANIMALS ARE!! GOD BLESS THEM! and the HUMANRACE HELP THEM!!
JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO IDA FOR ALL YOU DO AND ALL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THAT SPEAK UP UP FOR OUR ANIMALS. IT IS OUR DUTY TO TAKE CARE OF ALL ANIMALS THAT ARE NOT TAKEN CARE OF. I WILL NOT VISIT SOUTH KOREA AND WILL NOT PURCHASED ANYTHING FROM P&G, THE UNITED STATES GOVT SHOULD ALSO BOYCOTT TRADE WOTH KOREA. THIS IS REALLY OUT OF HAND, WHAT KIND OF GOVT WOULD ALLOW THIS TO GO ON FOR SO LONG.THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE BEHIND BARS EATING OATMEAL FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. THEY DONT DESERVE A DRINK OF WATER.THE BEST THING WE CAN DO, IS ASK GOD TO TAKE CONTROL OVER THIS PROBLEM, IF ENOUGH OF US ASK , THE LORD WILL DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THE ANIMALS.PRAY FOR THEM EVERYDAY, IT JUST TAKES A FEW MOMENTS. THABKS ALSO TO THE SOUTH KOREA PEOPLE THAT ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO GET THE DOGS OUT, YOU WILL BE PROTECTED BY THE LORD FOR YOUR WORKS.
We need to do something NOW, eating dogs and cats is not right and it needs to be stopped. This is cruelty to animals
We are boycotting all articles from Procter & Gamble until they do not stop their cruelty against animals !
What is wrong with those people that is so unbelievable pets should cherished
pets that makes me so angry.
The last time I visited South Korea, I was shocked at the treatment given to your animals. I will never revisit until care is given to the street dogs.
We need to get the S. Korean Government to outlaw this barbaric, cruel, sick practice and educate their people. Then make it a SEVERELY punishable crime to torture, kill or consume any companion animal such as a dog or a cat. This sick practices debases the human spirit—and the misery inflicted on these animals will surely someday come back to the people that caused it. How can this meat be healthy for a human to consume? It must carry hazards that will show up down the road—nothing that lives in that kind of misery and dies in such agony could be healthy to consume. This must be stopped –NOW. When I hear of the agony our American horses suffer in the Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses I am sickened also. We need to ask our House Judiciary Committee to get H.R. 503 off the hold pattern and vote ‘yes’ to make shipping our American horses across the border for slaughter illegal NOW. We as humans have a responsibility to these companion animals—dogs, cats, horses—these intelligent, caring animals that only want to offer us love and service–in exchange for what? Some clean water and a little decent food and perhaps some human kindness? While free range chickens and pigs and cattle that are treated humanely during their lives and deaths are obviously preferable meat sources for us we HAVE to start looking at vegan alternatives—there are simply too many people on this planet to think we can all continue to make meat a regular part of our diets and have any hope of practicing this free range philosophy.
Sandy… I am a Canadian, and proud to be so…normally. But like many, many Canadians, I deplore my country’s pathetic, archaic and weak laws against animal cruelty, specifically the annual “Great Canadian Seal Slaughter” and our allowance of horses etc. being ferried across into Canada for slaughter. I encourage all Americans to support the bill Sandy speaks of. Support also, as I do, all other organisations that work towards eliminating the cruelty we humans show towards our animal companions. Meanwhile animal activists in Canada are also demanding tougher laws from our government against animal cruelty in any form. I too have known of the plight of animals in Korea and China,(I never knowingly buy anything from Korea, though that’s harder when they are from China), and I see mental images of my own beloved furry companions faces were they being thrown into a boiling pot of water or skinned alive. That’s the stuff of nightmares.
lets teach our children kindness, not cruelty, and we will have a better world for all.
We need to stop this now! Next they will be eating us.
This is really horrible, I don’t understand how people just can do it.
I am glad people like you react. But if only it had an impact on these people. They think about money and don’t care about anything else…
The more I see, hear and read about the ongoing seemingly ever increasing cruelty involving animals is soul destroying. We have a moral DUTY as supposed ‘human beings’ to put an end to the cruelty and endless suffering of these poor animals. There is no better companion than a dog. They are loyyal and all they ask for in return for their loyalty is a little food, affection and they truly are man’s best friend. They are intelligent and feel every single emtion we feel as humans. There really is NO damn excuse why these ‘people’ should eat dogs. God allowed man to eat meat as in cattle, chicken etc. etc. Even then, it should be done 100% humanely. Free range farming is the only way to go and there should be no cruelty involved in farming whatsoever. To kill torture and deliberately inflict pain and suffering the way they do is inhuman. It’s no wonder the world is in the sorry state it is. There is NO respect for animals and few people really care about what happens to the farm aniamls before they end up nicley packaged on the shelves in their supermarkets and stores. Put these ‘creatures’ that are responsible for this insane cruelty into the cages and let them experience the fate they’ve subjected the animals to. Clearly they have no heart and it HAS to be stopped. For heavens sake, grow fruit and vetables and eat meat sparingly. There is simply NO excuse. They HAVE to be stopped. Other than the bad karma they WILL one day bear the brunt of, imagine for one second how much pain and suffering these poor loyal dogs and cats are subjected to every second of their miserable lives. If no-one put’s a stop to this their suffering will continue and they will carry on doing what they do. It’s simply NOT ON!!! NO NO NO!!! NO MORE!!! PLEASE lobby/boycott release all the dogs and ensure they are stopped. It’s barbaric.
Dogs are supposed to be man’s best friends. People don’t eat friends. They should learn from Hachiko, the story about a loyal dog in Japan who went to the train station daily for years looking for his master who passed on.
Ghandi said “you can tell the measure of a person or a country in how they treat their animals”. I am not a people-person AT all, and when I hear of things like this, it is no wonder that I prefer to spend my time with my animals, than people. This practice is so abhorent to me that I am struggling to get my mind around this. It is not just dogs that go through absolute torture like this. I saw a programme on TV a while ago where they boil cats ALIVE (and I am positive that it doesn’t stop at cats and dogs). I never cried before like I cried on that day. These are the same people that come to my country and poach our wildlife. I cannot believe that humans can sink so low. How do they get away with this.
Thank you so much for all you do for the dogs in Korea, and all the animals around the world. It is time to start having more compassion for all animals.
Thank God for people like IDA!!
I cannot believe how inhumane people are. Do they not realize these animals are live beings with feelings and emotions? How can they look and see their eyes looking back at them and do the things they do?
South Korea….you should be ashamed of yourself.
we need better laws to ban this outrage. it goes on all over the world.
GOD PLEASE GIVE US A NEW EARTH,(SOON)
i am writing many articles online to educate the world about all these sick acts going on all over the world, such as animal crush videos, gassing in shelters, euthanize, animal slaughtering, and torturing and other abuse of animals. don’t forget to support H.R. bill to ban animal crush videos. we need to get together online and fight these sick people to make them stop, once and for all.
Please stop abusing and killing these poor animals. They feel pain, too.
Lets stop this guys doing this!!!!! They are so many there, why don’t they eat each other???? it was a bless.
May Korea and China come to realize that killing and eating dogs is a horrendous act to most of the world. Dogs are designed to be man’s best friend! How can they raise these precious puppies to adult dogs and not see how friendly and personable they are? But then, so are chickens, cows, and pigs. May God have mercy on all of his creations!
I have known and abhorred this practice for several years and sent petitions and letters to the South Korean government. I have joined ANIMAL ASIA, who also has been actively fighting for these unfortunate creatures. Not only brutally kill and eat the South Koreans dogs, cats don’t fare any better. They are boiled and skinned alive, if one can imagine that. I have seen a video, some years ago, where a woman pushed down a cat with a stick back into the vat with boiling water. The poor thing was trying to get out, but the woman showed no mercy. It not only broke my heart, I made me cry out in anguish. The image still stays with me today. Although the Korean government has a law that forbids to consumption of dogs and cats, it is only loosly enforced or not at all. We need to unify and do everything in our power to stop this.
Not one in NYC? I’ll repost! Very troubling. People from any country especially in Korea should be appalled and stand up for these animals! There is something very wrong with people who can participate or know and not do anything about this.
I’ve been trying to help the dogs and cats of Southeast Asia, South Korea, the Philippines for so long. I never go a day without thinking about them…praying for them. Their images are burned into my psyche and soul. Please look at KAPS sometime, the Korean Animal Protection Society. This is where it all started, the attempt to save and protect these beloved animals. Also look at Animals Asia and Dr. Dog. Jill has been trying to change attitudes about dogs and cats in China. Thank you so much Scotlund for lending your voice to this horrendous nightmare. May the plight of these beloved dogs and cats and their rescuers be continue to be heard and witnessed.
How can we find out what we can contribute on July 6th?
EVERYONE – PLEASE GET YOUR CITY INVOLVED IN THIS WORLD WIDE EVENT PROTEST –
THESE ANIMALS DEPEND ON US TO DO SOMETHING TO HELP THEM
Is there anyone in Philly willing to join me on this day? As far as I know there is no day of action in my area.
Eating meat is bad for your health. Eating carnivorous animals just seems plain wrong.
I’m very happy to to have the voice for the animals, we are they voice and to stop the killing of these innocent animals. Please Korea and China have love one another… animals and people.. Blessed is the one who takes care of God’s creatures, whom they were given charge of… people who care work everyday to be the voice for animals without no voice of their own to safe award their health and to fight the evil that put so many in such grave danger! Please fight for what is right! United we stand to help these innocent animals.
I hope the dog eating coutries will see the light!
heres my poem: Speaking for those who cant put it into words.
………………………………………………………
I wish I was a meathead,in the fog again.
I wouldnt notice all the blood that’s runnin down the drain.
Walking past the butchers shop would seem real cool to me.
Rows of corpses hanging there, I wouldnt even see.
Dead lamb lying on a slab to me would be a meal,
wouldnt know of suffering, couldnt even feel.
And if I was a meathead, just think what I could do
take a bag of nuts and wander off to visit the local zoo.
I wouldnt feel the agony, the yearning to be free,
nor hear the cry for years gone by spent in captivity.
Then I’d stroll on down the country lane, as peaceful as can be,
never hear the hunting horn, nothing to bother me.
No outraged hunters on my trail, no butchers out for blood,
no pet shop owners on my tail,
fur coats would look real good.
Animal experiments would never get me mad.
yep,if I was a meathead the world wouldn’t look so bad.
Cruelty to animals escalates to cruelty to people. It has been proven that many killers began their career with cruelty to animals.
What goes around comes around.
Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. Matthew 5:7
Please lets stop the tortuous deaths of this poor defenseless animals!! We need to show some humanity and be the voice for all our animal friends. Thank you for taking action.
I myself am embarking on a rescue mission, travelling over 6000 miles (having never even been abroad for over 30 years), to work at a Phillippine Rescue centre, as a volunteer, saving dogs from the meat trade…See my website for details–>http://dogrescuefareast.webs.com/
Thank you to every rescuer, animal carer, and person who does what they can to end this vile trade…Bless you all.
This is soo terrible that things like this still go on in this day and age! I am disgusted and horrified that this happens. I pray for all those dogs and i hope that In defense of animals can put an end to this practice. It makes me so sad, i wish i could rescue them all!
These dogs that you say would end up in a shelter finding it a forever home ( in the united states) is not so true. WE sell dogs from shelters to other countries for this very purpose and shelters in the U.S sell dogs and cats to cruel research labs. Check out New Iberia research labs in Louisiana. They buy from shelters.
All it takes is for the united states to stop being greedy by selling lost and homeless animals to other countries and labs .
Wake up American people. Look what we are doing. TAke some responsibilty for these poor animals. stop selling lost pets and do what you say, Find them a forever home.
Justice would be for God to remove from the face of the earth all the animals of His creation…
Michael: God won’t need to do that; humans are already wiping out their fellow animals at an astonishing rate. And as somebody once said, “Each species’ extinction brings us one more closer to our own.”
Wise words.
Obviously the people who do this cannot care about animals. Maybe the best way to reach them and the country who allows this kind of torture is to boycott their products. I try never to buy anything from Korea.
I applaud the efforts of IDA and other organizations for trying to stop this barbaric and horrific practice. I don’t think places like South Korea and China will ever stop the horrible torture of animals, which goes on in other countries as well. My husband and I are vegetarians, as we also cannot stand the suffering and torture that goes on in slaughter houses, as well as factory farming. It’s a shame that people can’t be forced to watch what really goes on in slaughter houses, etc.
I’m so glad to be vegan. And I became one when I had to film at a slaughterhouse – I’m a tv Producer. I find it archaic, barbaric and inhumane the way animals are treated not just in Korea and China, which are extreme examples, but all over the world. Witness the growing number of children torturing and killing animals for fun. Where are these children’s parents? Thank you for your actions.
Thank you for your courageous and respectful actions to stop and put an end to the degradation of humanity who continue to torture and kill animals. Helping animals is helping people, too. Thanks to CARE and IDA.
Mans cruelty for the sake of food , oh my God. I pray the voices for the voiceless are heard loud and clear. Comapassion is all it takes and to put yourself in place of the animal, think about it, it isn’t hard to imagine.
