Hope Animal Sanctuary Rescues 15 Starving Horses And A Mule
Our report this week comes from our extraordinary volunteer Debbie Young. It’s a tale of 15 horses and a mule who will survive because Debbie launched and maintained our efforts for their rescue and care. And a huge thanks to Have A Heart Rescue for aiding with the treatment of some of the horses.
Debbie: “I’d been watching the news about starving horses five miles from my home. I had been told a few days earlier that the local humane society was working on either a seizure order or attempting to the get the keeper of the horses to voluntarily surrender them.
As of December 15, with at least 15 horses in various stages of malnourishment and several dead horses on the property in various stages of decomposition, the Yazoo County (Mississippi) Sheriff’s Department filed cruelty charges against Alvin Ross. Mr. Ross turned himself in and immediately posted bond. He then moved the horses to unknown locations. Now the horses wouldn’t even get the extra hay that was being thrown over the fence to them by concerned people.
On December 20, I received a call from a friend who was frantic because nothing was being done to take custody of the horses and get them the rehabilitative care they so desperately needed. It turned out the local humane society had decided NOT to proceed with seizure action, and the Sheriff’s Department was unable to take responsibility for the care of the horses.
I placed an urgent call to Doll Stanley of Hope Animal Sanctuary and her response was immediate. IDA would attempt to secure a seizure order for the horses. That afternoon, with a seizure order in hand thanks to IDA, I went to the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department to request its assistance in processing the order. After some serious verbal wrangling, the investigator realized we weren’t going away. He instructed us to return early the next morning when the deputy who had been working the case would be on duty, and the Justice Court judge would be in court. After an extended wait, the deputy took us to Justice Court where a sympathetic clerk gave me the first ray of hope since this all began. Thanks to excellent television coverage regarding the case, she was aware of the condition of the horses and made sure the judge was shown all the accompanying photos. We had a signed seizure order that was served immediately.
Within hours, we took over the care of the first four horses. That night they were warm, with fresh hay, and a measured amount of senior horse feed to begin their long journey back to a healthy weight.
The Mississippi Board of Animal Health (MBAH) responded to a phone call regarding the dead horses on the property. The Board discovered five dead horses and four sets of skeletal remains. Mr. Ross had a “killing field” for horses. Mississippi law requires dead “livestock” be buried within 24 hours, so Mr. Ross was charged a $1,000 fine for each of the dead horses. He could not be fined for the skeletal remains since the time of death could not be accurately determined. He also faced fines for each horse he removed from the property without a verifiable Equine Infectious Anemia test. He was ordered to provide the location of the horses he had moved.
Thanks to the action of the MBAH, coupled with the issuing of the seizure order, Mr. Ross complied the next day with the remaining 11 horses. The lone mule is still on the property and being fed.
All of the horses suffer malnourishment ranging from moderate to severe. Their bodies are covered in thousands of blood-sucking ticks (the veteran rescuers agree they have never seen such infestation) and rain rot (bacteria) so bad it has gone through their skin. Two of the horses, both mares, suffer life-threatening conditions due to starvation and neglect but both are starting to show small signs of regaining their strength, and we are hopeful they will live to enjoy a life filled with love and comfort.
Have a Heart Horse Rescue graciously offered to take on some of the horses to help with their rehabilitation. Seven of the horses are in their care. All the others are in foster care at multiple locations and are doing as well as can be expected. Now that they are receiving life-saving nutrition, the ticks are being removed by brushing. The emaciated state of the horses makes it dangerous to use chemicals that will kill the ticks, so brushing is the safest remedy. The rain rot will be treated slowly with antibacterial shampoos as the weather allows.
I wish to thank Doll Stanley and In Defense of Animals for always being ready to take decisive action to help animals who have no voice. There are now fifteen horses in Mississippi who have food in their bellies and warmth from the cold. I am also so grateful to IDA supporters.”
Deborah L. Young
Stay tuned to IDA’s website and eNews for more news about the 15 horses as they fight their way back to health (and the mule), as well as the cruelty charges filed against Alvin Ross.
*UPDATE*
January 13, 2012 – IDA has been granted permanent custody of 15 starving horses and a mule seized after Yazoo County resident Alvin Ross was found guilty today in Yazoo County Justice Court, of nine counts of cruelty to animals. Charges were filed by the Sheriff’s Department on December 15, 2011, following the discovery of nine dead horses in varying stages of decomposition on the property. Ross was found guilty of confining the horses without sufficient quantity of wholesome food, a misdemeanor under Mississippi animal cruelty laws. The remaining horses were seized under a court order issued by Justice Court Judge Pam May on December 21, 2011, and are now at various locations receiving much-needed rehabilitative foster care and veterinary treatment. Judge May, who presided over the hearing today, offered to suspend the fines if Ross would surrender all rights to the seized horses.

You guys are amazing! Thank you for all you do to right these horrible wrongs!
I’d like to know why the Humane Society chose not to proceed with the seizure action on December 20th? Certainly doesn’t reflect well on them, and no doubt caused more delays. I agree, that the court should have set a much higher bond than $1000…at a minimum, $15,000 CASH.
Doll Stanley and the HOPE organization are all amazing angels! Such dedication to these poor animals. I am sick to my stomach after reading what happened. I don’t understand why Mr. Ross wouldn’t also be charged the fine for the skeletal remains… remains are remains, it shouldn’t matter the state they are in. What kind of a monster would move animals that strangers are trying to help with… I am looking forward to updates that say this monster is in jail.
Why wasn’t action taken sooner? I think those that knew about this and did nothing should also be held accountable. Too many times so called “Animal Control Officers” or “Humane Society Officers” responsible for the welfare of animals in a city or county do nothing when they should act immediately. Maybe some of those dead horses would be alive today had they acted.
Mississippi’s animal cruelty laws are not strick enough. We need to get involved on a political level by voting for officials that care and are active with animal cruelty laws, so they get elected and laws change for the better of the animals and humans will be held accountable for atrocities like this .
My heart goes out to you all, the strength, the hope, the well being, the love, that you have for the animals. It is just amazing! I also adopted one of the starving horses. She is a 4 year old sorrell, when we got her she was less than 700 pounds hair falling out, feet were horrible…..She is not the same horse anymore. She looks amazing!!
I just want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for doing what yall do for these animals.
Yes, these sick individuals should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; however, what is the law against cruelty to animals in Mississippi? – a slap on the wrist? a small fine? what is the jail time and other consequences? Every time I hear of this type of cruelty, the innocents never have the retribution they deserve! These scum who mistreat them literally get away with “murder”!!!!! These disgusting and despicable humans are usually never given the punishment they deserve – it’s up to the people in the country to come together and CHANGE THE WEAK LAWS letting these monsters walk away with little or no punishment. And….what does this say about the Humane Society involved in this case to just turn their heads and ignore this injustice?
Call, write and do whatever necessary to tell your state politicians AND our President that we will not stand for this abuse to animals and we want justice for them. Check with the HSUS, ASPCA and other organizations who post your states politicians voting record on animal welfare and see their score. Right now, President Obama ranks a C- for animal welfare. They only way to change this outrageous cruelty is to vote for the politicians who rank highest on animal welfare – ONLY WE CAN HELP THESE DEFENSELESS ANIMALS by protecting them with stricter laws and electing a government who is willing to enforce them!
It would be great if we were all wealthy and could donate tons of money to help when these cases happen – or could even pick up at any moment and help with the rescue and care of all those creatures who need us, but it’s not feasible for most. What is, however, is to change the laws and bring these scum to a TRUE justice!
our sould are a reflection of how we treat our animals
Those who commit such crimes ought to be prosecuted..
I am proud to be a supporter if IDA, thank you for the work you do to save these helpless creatures!
This type of thing goes on and on and I see the problem with the goverment agencies that are supposed to help, but look the other way. I live in the wealthiest county in Washington State, next to neighbors that take trips to Europe, yet their animals suffer from neglect. The neighbors have been reported for numerous unsanitary conditions and neglect/abuse of the animals. We have watched a horse collapse, forced to get up then led to the back of the property never to be seen again, heard ducks being smothered in a bag with adults laughing, kids screaming, goats not fed so they scream for hours to harass us, etc, etc. Suicide at the house. My family has gotten very sick from this place, including my horse, two dogs and the grossness continues. Every county official that has been out lies when they file their documentation and even make excuses for the people, while the animals suffer. Moldy junk piled floor to ceiling on a porch with animal excreatment all over it and code enforcement says there is no problem? This is after a rat/mice/fly/maggot problem! Another animal dies, another animal is sick, another neighbor sick, another vet bill for the neighbor…the county doesn’t care! A year and a half is long enough for the county to do something, but since these people have gotten reported they got another 18 animals! County just documents they saw nothing and then they don’t have to do their job. Waste of taxpayer dollars!
Anyone that would make a comment that even gives an inkling of support for this man and what he did to these horses is no better than the scum he is. These are intelligent, loving creatures. If you can’t afford to feed them, then you should not have them. Seems to me when you have that many your main purpose would be for the greed of making money from them.
Alas!Alas! that We live in such a sick cruel world. Why wouldn’t these four legged friends be helped? We are very very disappointed in the local Humane Society who decided to “TAKE THE STAND OF DOING NOTHING & NOTHING AND MAYBE IT WILL JUST GO AWAY?” THIS STINKS! they have NO HEART.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m starting to become very leary of the word “sanctuary”. Everytime you turn around you hear of an animal “sanctuary” being shut down to hoarding or neglect. I’ve been involved in trying to close down a cat “sanctuary” called Caboodle Ranch for almost a year now. Several hundred, possibly thousands of cats have died there.
I hope the state will charge this man w/ the hardest chunk of law they have down there – $4,000 is NOT enough, a slap on the wrist for the misery he caused. I’d shoot the sonofabitch.
Evelyn Ball, how right you are. Here in Northern California a similar situation occurred but with a greater number of horses. I think approximately forty horses were rescued, with twenty five or so in various stages of decomposing. Some fresh, some long ago that died. I called Northern California court (I’m in Southern California) only to find his case had been extended by one month. I now need to find my paperwork so I can follow up. I think this occurred in November. These are disgusting examples of the human race and I feel they should be taken out to the middle of Death Valley and left there. No human has the right to starve and harm these beautiful animals that God has given us. I don’t understand how he can watch from above and see what is happening to all our beautiful wild horses from the BLM and all the killer buyers and what they are doing and the individuals just tossing their horses out to forage for themselves, many only to die or end up with laminitis. I saved a beautiful Arabian that was starving to death in a field, and this week my vet said she would give us another month to see how she does as she has a very thin area left and the coffin bone might come through. SHe is a sweetie and like all the others don’t deserve this. THese individuals are lucky I’m not in power as they wouldn’t have a chance and couldn’t find a rock big enough to crawl under before I found them. They are dispicable human beings (did I say human beings). Thank you IDA and all who saved these animals. I wish I was closer and could help you save them. Please keep us up as to their condition. God Bless you.
We have to do something to help these animals. They didn’t ask to be mistreated.
I would like to comment on Doris’ remarks. The Animal Rights groups did not
breed the horses, the owners did thru intent or ignorance. Yes, we have too
many horses and if the owners would geld their stallions, accidental pregnancies would be minimal.
But money making is always the big carrot on the stick -”this horse is so grand I will breed him and sell the foal for a lot of money” ” I’ll get a lot of horses and sell them for slaughter and make a lot of money” These are living, sentient creatures that deserve food and shelter and Veterinary care.
Yes, it is expensive to own and care for horses.
In our small southwestern town the Sheriff’s Mounted Search and Rescue posse and other animal lovers in the community started a food bank for animals in need of food (horses, dogs, cats) when their owners can not afford to feed them. Get your community to do the same.
thats a great idea of having a food bank for peoples animals that have trouble feeding them proper. And I am so happy that the IDA stepped in and rescued those poor horses. They don’t deserve that kind of treatment those Horses endured at the hands of a man that didn’t care about them.the judge should have thrown the book at him and inprisoned him for a very long, long time.I just can’t understand how someone can be so cruel and heartless to treat animals the way he did and still feel good about themselves,or sleep at night knowing what they (he) had done and probably would continue to do so being he hadn’t been caught. Its a cruel world out there, and its even crueler one for God’s creations the animals.
Why was this person allowed to have these animals in the first place?
I’m grateful that many more people love animals than ignore or despise them.
It’s hard to believe that society has actually progressed over the centuries and decades in its regard for and treatment of animals when we see sad situations such as this.
But it’s important to remember that we have come far, and that, thanks to caring, committed people like Doll, and all of us IDA supporters, we will continue to move forward spiritually and morally.
One key to advancement is ceasing to let love of money — or fear of its absence — master us. Love knows no limits, and love debunks fear and greed.

GRACIAS.
I completely agree with Evelyn Hall.
I am devastated by reading this story and seeing these horrible photos. Why did it take so long to get help for these horses? Why was this abuser left with a small fine of $1000 and set free to abuse these horses more? How about a $100,000 fine that he can not post! With starving horses he was able to go away and take the horses with him? Our rules have to change starting today. This is a real disappointment. Thank you for everyone that stepped in.
We need to get these horses and all horses away from sick people like the one that hurt them!
Due to the lack of adequate laws, these abusers continue to get away with horrible cruelty! We must push for stronger as well as new laws that will send a huge message that animal abuse will never be tolerated and the punishment will be severe! Pray for these disturbed people!
Look what a wonderful thing the animal rights people did to save these animals from slaughter! There are tens of thousands more roaming the country side thanks to the AR fanatics. Horses here are selling for $10, IF you can find a buyer. People don’t have the money to feed them and they can’t find buyers. Thank the ARs.
Ignorant,moronic comment.
I agree with you, Doris is ignorant and moronic and probably could care less about the love these creatures give man. She probably only cares about the love of making money from them.
If the mule is still left on the property, what will happen to her?
I am so saddened that their are people out there that have no respect for any life. We must continue to stay united and fight against this cruelty and that is why there should be stronger laws to be able to interfere and let the good people do something good for them before it is always late for some animals that don’t make it. This is so cruel!!!
Thank you for bringing unfortunately these horrendous real stories to the public. People need to know the cruelty that exists for these animals so more people are aware and can tell when they see abuse and support organizations like yourself. There is no excuse for this.
God bless you all for doing the right thing.
I am so glad you are an activist for this…I wouldn’t even know where to start. This is a disaster.
GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU 4 HELPING THESE PRECIOUS INNOCENT HORSES
Mississippi must be living in the Dark Ages to allow this to happen. The lack of action by the Humane Society is totally abominable and disgraceful and unfortunately reflects terribly on the National organization. People who were aware from now on take the law into your own hands instead of waiting for the Neanderthals.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST THIS SICKO NEEDS TO BE SEVERELY PUNISHED. These animals were his responsibility and to let them suffer so much and for so many to die a horrible and painful death THERE IS JUST NO EXCUSE. He must also be banned from ever being around or owning any animal (dogs, cats, rabbits, anything) as he evidently has no conscience as to their care and well being.
Thank you for rescuing these horses. In this life, I will never understand how supposed “humans” can be so cruel to an animal who depends on humans for their care. Job well done.
We live in such a sick cruel world. Why wouldn’t this guy try to get help? I’m really disappointed in the local Humane Society who decided to “TAKE THE STAND OF DOING NOTHING AND IT WILL JUST GO AWAY.” THAT STINKS! Thanks to everyone who helped work so hard to help these poor animals and if each and everyone of us donate something(I already donate to IDA but will send a donation to Dolly’s Fund also) because we can and do make a difference. Let’s all make a huge difference and help pay for these animals to live.
SO VERY PLEASED THAT YOUR SAVING THEM. I HATE THESE EVIL LOWLIFE PEOPLE WHO DO THIS TO INNOCENT ANIMALS. I ONLY HOPE NOW THEY GET PROSECUTED BIG TIME ! THEY NEED PRISON AND A BAN FROM EVER KEEPING AN ANIMAL AGAIN EVER !!
May this horses be delivered from the hands of those who didn’t care into the hands of someone who will love and hold and provide.” It is that prayer that is being answered. It is that miracle for which I am truly grateful.
Thank you to all who stepped up to save them.
Doesn’t anybody think that changes need to be made in how authorities react in a timely manner? Can’t anyone go the extra mile to find this information out if authorities themselves don’t know? Doesn’t anyone realize the sense of urgency in the matter? What if it was you in need of help? Might you want the help immediately and hope that someone has the wherewithal to dig further in finding your aid quick?
People who hurt innocent Animals should pay dearly for it. You are doing wonders by helping innocent Animals. I hope the person or persons that did this charged for Crulety to Animals. They are Harmless, Horses are smart and love able. If you need my help let me know. I will do what I can to help.
Anyone who harms and kills any animal should be charged to the full extent of the Law.
It makes me sick to know that thier are people out there that would do harm to any Animal. I am a Animal Lover, always will no matter what. I try to help out by Sending Messages to the right person or persons. I believe in all od you. I Bless You for what you do for Animals. If I can help you in anyway I can let me know. I am just glad that there are still people like you out thier helping anyway you can. You deserve a lot of Credit for it, in do time you will get it.
This is so heartbreaking. Humans are to protect the animals. These horses were betrayed by their owners and I pray God will make these people pay for the pain and suffering they caused these horses. Every life has a purpose. All animals are individuals and they have feelings and thoughts and they suffer the pain and the joy that we do. They are entitled and they deserve an opportunity to live. You can see into a person’s soul by the way they treat animals.
“If all the beasts were gone, man would die from loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beast, happens to the man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the sons of earth.” Chief Seattle
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi
Horses is the companion site to the PBS Nature special on Horses. The site introduction aptly explains the importance of ‘Horses’ in the following manner: “They have transported us, fed us, amused us, worked for us, fought battles for us. Their beauty, grace, and fiery spirit have inspired us. Many centuries ago, their speed and endurance altered human perceptions of distance, and permitted physical achievements that otherwise would have been impossible. To a degree unmatched by any other animal, the horse has profoundly influenced the course of civilization.”
If a child was treated like this we would take up arms for just punishment. If you are an evil person, there is no reason not to put you in prison for life! You are useless!
Alvin Ross and the authorities took their sweet time doing nothing for these poor creatures. What the hell is wrong with them when they knew these horse were starving to death? As soon as a complaint was made the horses should have been removed. People are just pathetic. If it had been some starving humans a big deal would have been made and they would have probably been rescued right away. However to most idiotic humans out there animals don’t seem to have any feelings or rights and it is okay for them to slowly starve to death. The more I see and hear about the human race in general I believe there should be a human cull to get rid of the useless uncaring human garbage that inhabit this planet!!!!!!!!!!!
Lame Mr. Ross, and the do-nothing animal welfare people. And the HSUS, who accept money and do diddly to help.
Anyone who harms and kills any animal should be charged to the full extent of the law. It makes me sick to know that thier are people out there that would do harm to any Animal. I am a Animal Lover, always will no matter what. I try to help out by Sending Messages to the right person or persons. I believe in all od you. I Bless You for what you do for Animals. If I can help you in anyway I can let me know.
please let me know the monitary support needed… I’ll do what I can afford.
WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS! THAT’S WHY I AM A DONER AND SUPPORTER OF IDA TO SAVE ANIMALS FROM THIS KIND OF FAITH! PLEASE BRING JUDGEMENTS AGAINST THESE MONSTERS!!!!
God bless all of you. I am blown away by these pictures. If I could volunteer ant time please respond.
I am just amazed at how any person could treat animals this way!! Thank you God for organizations and people like you!! I wish I lived where I could either help yall or any other organization in helping these animals. I would love to just go brush, feed or interact with the animals. I have 4 horses of my own that I feed, brush and take care of and I LOVE it!! If there is anyway I can help, I would be glad to volunteer.
I’m not sure where Have a Heart Rescue is located but they may be close enough for me to volunteer at.
Again, thank yall for everything that you do for these innocent animals!!
Laura Leachman
This just breaks my heart, I’m so thankful there are people like you out there to love and care for these animals in need, they wouldn’t have a chance without you.
que lastima la gente que no ama la naturaleza
