Give Geese a Chance! Join our Virtual Demo and in just seconds make your voice heard!
Join us for IDA’s Day of Online Action on Monday March 28 to ask Mayor Michael Bloomberg to cancel all plans to kill Canada geese in New York City!
For the past two years, the city has contracted with the Wildlife Services division of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to kill Canada geese. So far more than 2,800 Canada geese have been cruelly rounded up during molting season, when the geese shed their flight feathers and cannot fly away.
After being rounded up in pens, the geese are transported to mobile gas chambers where they are cruelly asphyxiated with carbon dioxide gas. It is a slow, painful and utterly unjustified death for these beautiful birds.
The city claims the geese are killed to make air travel safer, but killing geese does nothing to enhance airline safety.
For the past two years, new populations of geese have moved in to replace those killed. Repopulation by new flocks of geese is inevitable, totally undermining the effectiveness at reducing their numbers. It is abundantly clear that these repeated killings do not limit the traffic of Canada geese in the airways around NYC airports, and most likely, just increase it.
This year, everyone can speak up for Canada geese, from the comfort of your home, by participating in our demonstration on Facebook and Twitter. It’s easy to do and a great way to tell Mayor Bloomberg to stop the gassing of geese.
Here’s how it works:
Facebook Instructions – Speak up for Geese in 3 easy steps!
1. Make sure you have your protest “sign“. All you have to do is right click on the “Canadian Geese” image and choose “Save” to get this “sign”. Replace your profile photo to your “sign” and keep it up all week!
2. Follow this link and “Like” Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s Facebook page. This will allow you to post comments on his page – under his posts. He has recently changed his profile to block comments, posts and tags but you are still able to respond to his posts. So even if what he posts has nothing to do with Geese – you can still leave a comment on his page letting him know that as a voter – you expect him to represent you and save these geese! Here is a sample comment that you can use :
The senseless gassing to death of hundreds of Canada geese must be stopped immediately! Make NYC’s airways truly safe by coming up with a plan that is humane and effective at keeping geese out of the pathway of airplanes. Other cities are doing it. NY can too!
3. Post a comment! Remember that your comments will be seen by followers of all ages and comments that include profanity or can be interpreted as “abusive” will probably be removed before the general public gets a chance to read them and may result in your profile being reported and/or deleted by Facebook. IDA is not responsible for any comments you may leave or action that results.
Twitter Instructions – Speak up for Geese in 3 easy steps!
1. Make sure you have your protest “sign“. All you have to do is right click on the “Canadian Geese” image and choose “Save” to get this “sign”. Replace your profile photo to your “sign” and keep it up all week! You can also change the background of your Twitter page to show this sign too!
2. Follow this link and “Follow” Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s Twitter Page. This will allow you to Tweet targeted comments to his page using @ and #! Here’s an example of what that looks like :
#@MikeBloomberg Make #NYC’s airways truly safe by coming up with a plan that is humane and effective at keeping geese out of the pathway of airplanes. Other cities are doing it. NY can too! @IDAUSA
By adding the @ before his name and IDAUSA (our Twitter Page so that he can see that all the comments are originating from the same action) – this will send your Tweet as a message to Mayor Bloomberg’s page. The #s help make your Tweet go viral by showing up in a search page for other people also tweeting about that topic. By putting a #in front of NYC or NewYork City – you are increasing your chances of getting other New Yorkers to Tweet your message too and joining your demo!
3. Tweet! Because Twitter is a constantly moving message system – you’ll want to Tweet your messages to Mayor Bloomberg a few times that day to make sure your Tweet doesn’t get buried. But remember messages and Tweets that include profanity or can be interpreted as “abusive” may result in your profile being reported and/or deleted by Twitter. IDA is not reasonable for any messages or Tweets sent or action that results.
We’ll have a staff person on IDA’s Facebook all day to answer any questions you might have that day! Don’t forget to also send a message via this alert too!
Thank you for speaking up for the Canada geese in NYC. Their survival depends on your voice!

Stop the insanity! This has never been and will never be a solution. We need to coexist. Save the geese! Make the right decision.
Murder should never be a solution. Many other cities have had issues with geese and air traffic problems that were able to solve the issue without killing their geese. We must learn how to live with nature and all living creatures. Do not let NYC solutions resonate with the Third Reich solution!
is this truly necessary, birds fly pretty much by routine, height, pathway etc. can planes make a detour for this, crazy sure the air is full of metal machines, how could the birds pass thru them. this is a massive shame on mankind. get some trains going. instead of dumping oil in the ocean and killing wildlife.
Why is it that for mankind, the only solution is always destruction? Anytime wildlife interfere with the oil industry, cattle industry…etc…Our government makes the decision to eradicate. How much more will you destroy before you learn??
With all do respect, Mr. Mayor…..There is NOTHiNG HUMANE of which you speak! Once again…It is an imposition of mankind upon Innocent Animals!!! Please consider letting well enough alone and find something more productive to do…Other than KiLL and DESTROY!!! Thank You for Your Time.
STOP! If you can’t help- don’t harm
Geese are not only wonderful they are an example of great relationships, they also bond for life. We need more of them not less. Leave the geese alone- if you can’t help don’t harm. Stop/forbid fishing and hunting and road kill- this will help everyone once and for all!
What an unsafe world for geese ! Let them live!
Killing geese is an act of savagery. Save the geese!
DO NOT KILL THESE SENTIENT BEINGS WHO MATE FOR LIFE!
Geese have family structurs just like us. wife and husband for life. children whom have to be thought where to fly to find food. and older grand father and grand mothers to show them the way where to fly to in winter and summers. when bloomberg kills hundreds of geese, this links are brooken and their lives are seriusely desturbed. mr: blumberg you have children and grand children do you want someone kill them because they just think is better for envirenment?
Mr Mayor.
Where is the sense in USDA destroying resident Canada Geese?
These are no threat to air passengers
.Live and let live.
Please don’t kill these beautiful geese. They have harmed no one and deserve to be allowed to live. All life is precious and should be treated with respect. To dispose of these innocent creatures in such a cruel fashion is just disgusting!!
Do you think you are God , live them along I will never go to Canada and so are my friends also we never will give our money for Canada no products from Canada It is absolutely disgusting that Bloomberg wants to kill these innocent Canada Geese. I see them along the Bronx River Parkway and they are bothering no one. I think they are beautiful and I look forward to seeing them as I drive. What is wrong with people that they have to abuse and kill all wildlife. Mr. Bloomberg, you should be ashamed of yourself. Just remember, that what goes around comes around and usually comes back to you 10 fold.
LIVE AN LET LIVE….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please save them!!!

The problem is not the geese, or any other animal – it is PEOPLE, with their infernal sense of self-entitlement to every inch of space and air to the exclusion of every other living creature that we are pushing off this planet. We have no right to attempt to “manage” any other creature when we can’t manage our own population. Our mismanagement of animal species and interference with nature is the cause of every single animal-related problem. We cater to the hunters and manipulate species for them to kill. In the process we create problems we cannot solve. But do we ever look to ourselves? NO. We are approaching 9 BILLION people on earth. While we have been busily procreating, we have dumped garbage in our ocean, overfished the seas, stood by while we let species go extinct, developed the horrors of factory farms and deplete every natural space. We don’t have enough food for these people and we certainmly no longer have jobs for everyone. 9 BILLION people – several million of which live in the New York area – but 400 geese were too much for Prospect Park????
Kill, kill, kill! Is that all we know how to do? Solve every problem with bloodshed or gassing or clubbing? Where is our compassion? Where is our humanity? We are disgusting! Please stop the killing of innocent, harmless, beautiful sentient beings! They deserve respect!
Come on Mayor Bloombewrg-somewhere inside you there’s gotta be a heart! Give geese a chance-don’t hurt them!
We Have To Keep Telling Mayor Bloomberg and the USDA to Stop This Cruel And Inhumane Torture And Killing Of Innocent Resident Canada Geese. There Are Numerous Humane Ways To Manage Birds And Wildlife. Sonar And Radar Can Also Be Used to Avoid Collisions With Birds, As Proven Successfully By Israel. Resident Geese In Local Parks Don’t Fly As High As Migratory Geese, And They Stay Close To Home; Not Flying To Airports. They Are Being Used As Scapegoats In The Name Of Safety. This Death Contract On Canada Geese With The USDA And Mayor Bloomberg Has To Stop Now!
This is horrible. They are a breathing and living being. What a horrific thing to even think of. It disgusts me that I live in a world where ppl would want to do something like this!
The human race has two distinct advantages over our fellow inhabitants on Planet Earth; we have the capacity to reason and an aptitude for compassion. When seeking a solution to a problem, which of these assets do we employ? Why, we don’t even bother to consider alternatives. We go straight to the Auschwitz solution.

The thought of gassing should stick in your craw, Mike!
Please stop killing these innocent animals………We r killing nature………
It is absolutely unconscionable to kill innocent wildlife whom were are so blessed to have even set a webbed foot in this town so full of human waste and garbage and excess. We should be welcoming them as ambassadors of grace and beauty and nature, not poison-gassing them, Despicable. NYC should learn to responsibly and humanely manage
wildlife.
It is time for humans to stop being bullies and start acting like the intelligent species we think we are. The negativity this action sends out is re percussing already. . . the planet is not invincible!
PLEASE STOP killing the GEESE!
So once you have killed off all the wildlife. What’s next?
Really, you people can’t come up with a better solution than killing them.
Remember you were voted into office. You need to abide by what the people want, when the people want it.
And this is what the people want, stop this slaughter.
There has to be another solution to this situation. There is no way that these geese have to be gassed. Where is the compassion?
Please do not kill these beautiful geese, do not kill them in such a horrific way, if politicians want the votes of the people start showing compassion for all living beings.
Show the people you are not a follower you are a leader, PLEASE STOP THE KILLING!!!!
So to get rid of them your going to kill them and people wonder y god is so pissed off at the world, instead of killing them move them so your safe and they are safe, you all need to remebr we invade there space not the other way around.
“As Long as we will have slaughters Houses we will have Battlefield” TOLSTOI I feel so insecure in a world where we reject, torture, ignore, eat and slanders animals. Aren’t there those who bring such a portion of magic in our life? They feel more than they think, and they feel so well! Plus we know they are balancing the microcosm of the earth, and now we wander why the earth is so sick? Let’s check out and se how we treat our cousins leaving with us… and how many blood is runing for cruelty, greed and stupidity of humans being!
In the past 100 years, 97% of all North American forests have been completely destroyed. Where does the madness end? What world do you want for our children? No goose droppings and astroturf parks? We have to have a sane and humane vision of our environment. This tunnel vision extermination based on a) complaints by golf businesses that geese “mess up their golf courses” b) unsubstantiated and debunked claims that geese cause tremendous problems with air traffic c) developers in Staten Island, upstate NY and the surrounding area who have been frustrated by the Canada Geese’s migratory bird protection status which has only recently been lifted when Canada Geese were changed to the category of “resident” and not “migratory” birds. Same birds. Protected prior. Now stripped of all protection. Same birds.
I, for one, do not want to live on a planet with no wilderness and no wildlife for the benefit of private industries who have been frustrated because the 97% destruction of our natural areas (they believe) should be completed to its capacity. Without wilderness – there is no wildlife.
LEAVE OUR GEESE ALONE. Get the USDA out of here. Destroy the USDA’s authority and “wildlife services” demolition team that not only is paid to destroy our local geese, but goes across the country destroying thousands and thousands of wild animals where they are most vulnerable. Including Bob cats, starlings, grackles, squirrels, river otters. This is the holocaust of our natural world. STOP IT NOW.
Killing is only a quick fix ,it does not solve the problem.
Grow a heart.
We don’t need to behave like monsters in everything we do.
You don’t need to murder these geese, so don’t do it.
Try a little empathy for a change.
The murder of wildlife, especially our geese, is a crime and needs to be stopped immediately. It appears that the majority of the people in power enjoy these mass murders as no one seems to be stopping them.
Bloomberg needs to take a good long look at the history books and see how not that long ago Jewish people were singled out and gassed in a similar fashion to these modern day geese murders. Then and now it appears that the majority of those in power looked the other way. When will people learn? When will people realize that every one of the Lord’s creatures have a right to live their lives in peace the way the Lord had intended. After all didn’t Moses build the Ark to save the animals? Wasn’t Moses instructed to do so by the Lord?
It is about time that the piolicians started taking into consideration what the public wants and we want people to stop killing our wildlife, now!
Resident Geese like the on’e inhabiting our parks and greenspaces did not fly into US Airways flight 1549.
Regardless, we are on the Atlantic Flyway. They’ve been doing this for thousands of years.
Peace to the Geese.
Please stop killing these beautiful birds. The ones in your park are not the ones that were flying in the plane’s flight path, those were migratory geese. You are rounding up and killing beautiful birds, that will not correct the problem. Stop using mass slaughter as a means to solve wildlife issues.
Humans don’t have the right to play G-d. Nature takes care of nature
It did before we came. Will this abusive killing keep going till near extinction? Then they’ll need to be reintroduced by human intervention to get their numbers back like the wolves. We have over population but we don’t gather people in numbers every year and kill them inhumanly
I’d rather keep the planes flying than the geese, thank you very much. Let’s not have the need for another Miracle on the Hudson.
This has been addressed over and over and over again. It is not an either or. The geese in the park are outside the 7 mile limit. And they are not migratory.
Gerry, the “Miracle on the Hudson” plane that ditched in the river had a documented history of engine trouble, including one incident in the flight just prior to the landing in the Hudson. The only miracle there was that that plane didn’t crash on numerous other occasions and kill many people. Clearly, the geese were not the real problem. There were also recent news stories about air traffic controllers asleep on their jobs because they are required to work excessively long shifts. Do you really think the problem in the air is BIRDS? Geese are not creating mechnical problems, text messaging or falling asleep at the controls. Government officials like Mayor Bloomberg take foolish and ineffective nonsensical actions like killing geese to make you thinhk they are protecting your safety, but if you really understand the problem you wwould see that nothing is being done to deal REAL problems in air safety. There is bird-detecting radar called the Merlin System that is highly effective – why are we not installing this in our airports and planes? If you really want to talk air safety, this is one major answer.
Also, Israel cut their airplane-bird strike problem 88% without harming a single bird by mapping migration routes and slightly altering flights to not occupy major historical bird migratory patterns. Since there is no larger migratory path in the world than the one that transverses Asia/Europe and the Middle East, which is used by thousands of species and millions of birds, there is no earthly reason why we could not do the same thing here, over routes like the Atlantic Flyway, etc.
It is the government and the airline industry that needs to wake up and act responsibly for the lives that travel on planes – but the answer is obviously not killing birds.
I strongly urge Mayor Bloomberg to stop the senseless and cruel barbarian gassing to death of our poor resident Canadian geese.I sent him this message several times.Thank you IDA !
Mr. Mayor,
Please observe the Geese and you will see how graceful, faithful and family oriented they are!! They teach us a lot!
Let them live their life as we all want to live ours.
NYC needs to show the planet it does not enjoy killing animals, but wants to preserve wildlife and keep it alive…get with the program NYC!~
How is this even possible? It would be like caging and killing squirrels. Pointless and incredibly cruel. I am speechless. NYC and Mayor Bloomberg, shame on you.
We dont kill your Eagles, why are you killing our geese!
Please Mr Bloomfield do not allow the killing of these beautiful birds that so many of us love and enjoy.
They have a right to live as all Gods creatures do.
Please learn to live with geese. Dogs are an effective non-lethal deterrent of geese.
Thank you IDA!!!!
Stop this animal cruelty NOW. I’m boycotting NYC!!!!!
