BREAKING NEWS! Proposal to Legalize Commercial Whaling FAILS at IWC Meeting!
After two days of intense negotiations, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) today announced the rejection of a proposal to resume commercial whaling, banned since 1986. Thousands of IDA members responded to our emergency action alert by sending faxes to President Obama and Congress, urging them to block the whaling proposal. Thank you! It worked!
The proposal would have allowed countries like Japan, Norway and Iceland, who never stopped killing whales in the first place, to continue killing them, with the endorsement of the IWC. Thanks to pressure from IDA and whale supporters worldwide, we stood firmly unified, demanding real protection from hunting for whales. The world listened. And they agreed.
Although we prevailed in maintaining the global ban on commercial whaling, other significant pressures continue to harm whales and threaten their existence. Starvation, increasing predation by orcas, migration through industrial polluted waters, oil spills, military sonar, and commercial fishing operations are among the many obstacles threatening their survival today. The central location of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, for example, is home to an endangered sperm whale population. In 2009, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicated the population would not be able to withstand a loss of three additional whales due to man. Last week, the first dead sperm whale was found floating 77 miles south of the sunken rig.
Please enjoy the victory – and take pride in the part you played preserving the moratorium on commercial whaling. Stay tuned for upcoming alerts to further protect marine mammals and their habitats. Next time we ask you to send a letter or fax, remember this – it can work. Every fax and e-mail you sent made this victory possible.

I really don’t accept as true with this article. Even so, I did searched in Google and I have found out that you’re right and I was thinking in the incorrect way. Keep on producing quality content such as this.
THANK YOU. GOD BLESS ALL PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THIS VICTORY. I HOPE THAT ONE DAY SOON PEOPLE THAT ARE IN THE WHALING BUSINESS STOP KILLING THEM AND REALIZE THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO RESPECT ALL ANIMALS NOT ONLY WHALES BUT ALSO MANY OTHER ANIMALS THAT ARE ABUSED AND KILLED AROUND THE WORLD. THANK YOU.
Finally some good news. It doesn’t need to fail, it needs to END forever. Are people insane to hunt some beautiful animal that could not exist forever?
Physical force won’t compel scofflaws to stop breaking the anti-whaling law. Sanctions and other threats of punishment won’t do the trick. But just as one person turning on a light switch results in light for all in the room, so can one individual’s unconditional, selfless love, directly toward the whalers, contain the power to transform their minds and hearts. Though it sure doesn’t look like it, the whalers, in their true, spiritual selfhood, are actually just as closely connected to the LOVE that formed and maintains the universe as are the whales and those trying to save them. Anything and everything is possible to LOVE, which overcomes all obstacles. There is no power equal to LOVE, thus no power preventing the whalers from changing course — from literally turning around on the high seas, heading home, and taking up a new line of work, gentle work befitting their transformation.
How does this preserve the moratorium on commercial whaling? IWC’s failure to reach any kind of agreement would seem to give the whaling nation freedom to do whatever they want.
Good news, though it does mean these rogues will continue as before. It may be against the law, but it doesn’t bother some, they go ahead unpunished for their financial gains. We’ll have to go on supporting Sea Shepherd and all the others who are trying to save whales from getting killed. What a drag, one law doesn’t work, so how are we going to stop those who place themselves above the law and go ahead anyhow…
This is fantastic news, but does this now mean that Japan, Iceland and Norway will have to stop killing Whales, or will they just carry on regardless?? As pointed out there are many hazards in the lives Whales, but this is one that now does not come into the equasion. Many creatures that live in our oceans are in danger because of man, and because we can’t see them, it doesn’t cross a lot of peoples minds that there is a problem.
With regard to the oil spill, massive understatement there, I cannot understand why measures weren’t put in place years ago to deal with such a disaster, it is absolutely ridiculous that they are trying desperately to come up with ideas to combat this problem after the event. Deep sea drilling should be stopped, because it is obvious that this sort of a disaster will happen again at some point in the future, and the horrendous effects on marine life is unconscionable.
This is what “People Power” can do……..why can’t more people realize this and stick together to stamp out evil doers!!!!!!!!!
This cannot really be considered a victory – whaling must be stopped with the possible excfeption of 1 whale/year for Alaskan natives. Let us start by demanding a change in the name of the IWC and their mission to the International Whale Protection Commission.
YEAY! We did it!! SOOOO HAPPY!! Thank you everyone!
wonderful
This is great. I´m so happy to hear that the IWC don´t legalize commercial whaling. Unfortunately, the whales are threatened by polluted water, the industry, ships etc. We must protect these wonderful and beautiful creatures.
Wonderful news! Also just read the news about the toxic levels of metals being found in whales and other sea life, much higher than previously thought. One would think with all that “scientific research” the Japanese are doing they would have known this. Not good news for the whales or those who eat them. Oh well. Let the Sea Shepherds deal with the Japanese.
What wonderful news! The next step is to get Japan, Norway and Iceland to stop the illegal killings.
Wonderful! Thanks for the lead of IDA and other support groups.
IDA – Thank you so much for all you did here…Thank you so much!!!
F A B U L O U S !!!!
We are powerful when we work together.
Deborah
Thanks to all – It’s the boost that we – and more importantly, they – need to keep going….
This is GREAT news!!!
